EA has launched a free week-long trial for Battlefield 6, timed to run from August 18 to August 25, directly overlapping the first beta for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The move is widely seen as a deliberate attempt to undercut Activision's marketing push, especially after Battlefield 6 outperformed Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 in both critical acclaim and commercial success last year.
Free Trial Details and Top Gun Crossover
The free trial is available across consoles and PC, accessible through Battlefield Redsec, the free-to-play battle royale mode. Players can access the two newest maps – Wake Island and Tsuru Reef – and five multiplayer modes for Battlefield 6, plus the exclusive Top Gun-themed mode, Carrier Strike. The trial also introduces a Top Gun crossover, featuring character skins for Rooster (Miles Teller), Bob (Lewis Pullman), and Warlock (Charles Parnell), all voiced by the original actors. Notably, Tom Cruise's Maverick is absent.
This isn't the first time EA has used a free trial to counter a Call Of Duty launch; a similar promotion followed the release of Black Ops 7. The timing suggests EA is leveraging its game's strengths to maintain momentum, despite recent player backlash that led to a sizable update last month, adding naval battles and the classic Wake Island map.
Modern Warfare 4 Beta Schedule
The Modern Warfare 4 beta runs from Friday, August 21 to Tuesday, August 25, but only for players who pre-ordered the game. A second beta, open to all, follows from August 28 to September 1, and will also be available on Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. Activision is pushing the beta hard, featuring numerous multiplayer modes and, for the first time ever, a mission from the single-player campaign, in a bid to win back players disappointed by Black Ops 7.
Despite the competitive tension, players can technically try both games during the overlapping period, but the Call Of Duty beta requires a pre-order, while Battlefield 6's trial is free.
EA's Financial Pressures and Future Plans
EA's confidence in Battlefield 6 comes amid internal challenges. Although EA acknowledged that Battlefield 6 met 'all milestones for a high quality launch,' employees across all four development studios faced layoffs, while CEO Andrew Wilson received a sizable bonus. Additionally, EA was recently acquired by a group of private investors, including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, saddling the company with $20 billion of debt. EA plans to recoup this through 'organisational efficiencies,' which likely means further layoffs and a focus on its most lucrative franchises, such as Battlefield 6 and EA Sports FC 27.
The free trial and Top Gun crossover are part of EA's strategy to keep Battlefield 6 relevant and attract new players, even as it navigates financial restructuring. The outcome of this rivalry will be seen in player engagement metrics over the coming weeks.
