Transport for London (TfL) will begin major repair works on the A41 Brent Cross Flyover on September 24, a project expected to last up to two years and cause significant disruption for the over 120,000 vehicles that use the interchange daily. The first phase of the Brent Cross Interchange renewal programme, funded by the Department for Transport, aims to strengthen the structure and eventually remove the 7.5-tonne weight restriction imposed in October 2022.
Repair Works and Traffic Measures
Starting from the evening of September 24, the A41 Brent Cross Flyover will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Throughout the project, overnight and weekend lane and road closures will be implemented at various stages to allow construction to proceed safely. Signed diversion routes will be in place, and TfL has committed to updating residents and road users in advance of any changes.
The repair works involve replacing safety barriers on the flyover and approach ramps, installing a new waterproofing system to extend the structure's life, improving the flyover's reliability, and strengthening the structure to remove the current weight limit. TfL states that this work will reduce the risk of future unplanned closures and emergency repairs.
Impact on Traffic and Local Access
Drivers on surrounding roads, including parts of the A406 North Circular Road, the A5 Edgware Road, and the A1, should expect longer journey times. To minimize disruption during the festive season, TfL will pause works between late November and early January, ensuring visitors and businesses can still access Brent Cross Shopping Centre.

These works are essential to ensure it remains safe and reliable for the millions of journeys that depend on it." He added, "We recognise that the work will cause disruption, and we'd like to thank local communities and road users in advance for their patience. We will do everything possible to keep people moving and encourage those in the area to plan their journey in advance while this work takes place."
Future Phases and Next Steps
Future phases of the wider Brent Cross Interchange renewal programme are expected to include works to the mid-level roundabout and A406 slip roads. TfL advises all road users to plan their journeys in advance and stay informed about the scheduled closures and diversions as the project progresses.
