The Black Eel, a Grade II listed pub in Dalston, faces a licensing battle with a local resident over its bid to extend opening hours until 1.30am on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The venue, which operates in the former F Cooke pie and mash shop on Kingsland High Street, seeks the extension to ease financial strain from rising business rates and to remain competitive with nearby establishments.
Background and Financial Pressures
The pub, which opened in October 2025, is a food-led venue offering games such as darts, shuffleboard, table football, pétanque, and board games. Its managers argue that later closing times would allow patrons to leave more gradually, reducing the sudden rush of drinkers onto the street. They have already agreed to conditions, including a cap of 50 people allowed to stand with a drink, but the latest proposal has drawn opposition from a resident who claims to represent local concerns.
Resident's Objections
The resident, who wished to remain anonymous citing fear of reprisals from the pub's "radical" supporters, submitted a photo of people outside a different bar, Tipsy, about five minutes away, to illustrate potential noise and crowding issues. At a Hackney Council licensing panel hearing on Tuesday (August 11), he criticized the lack of a crowd control plan and warned that granting the extension could set a precedent for other venues. He emphasized that drinkers congregating outside would be problematic for pedestrians and residents who want to open windows on hot nights without hearing "a crowd of hundreds of people making a racket."
Pub's Response
Andy Solley, the venue's founder, countered that The Black Eel is not a nightclub, has no DJ, and does not have seating or queues at the front. "Patrons disperse gradually over a period of time," he said. Despite these assurances, the resident remained unconvinced, stating, "The applicant just seems complacent to me."

The council's licensing committee is expected to make a decision within five working days of the hearing. The outcome will determine whether The Black Eel can extend its hours, potentially impacting its financial viability and the character of the high street.
