A bridge connecting two West London Tube stations is set to be repainted in early August after months of campaigning by residents. The crossing linking Shepherd's Bush Market and Goldhawk Road will undergo general maintenance by Transport for London (TfL), followed by a new mural artwork funded by Hammersmith and Fulham Council.
Works scheduled for early August
A temporary sign on Uxbridge Road indicates a lane closure from August 3 to 7, 6am to 7pm, while the bridge is repainted. One resident said they welcome the update but are “eagerly waiting” for details about further improvements to Shepherd’s Bush Market station and platforms.
The announcement follows a concerted local campaign and intervention by London Assembly Member for West Central, James Small-Edwards. Mr Small-Edwards said he had repeatedly pressed TfL to improve Shepherd’s Bush Market station, though to no avail. TfL had committed to repainting the crossing by the end of March, but the deadline passed with little progress.
Campaign group pushes for change
Fix Uxbridge Road (FUR), a group formed after a 2025 petition urging the council to improve the area, has also been pushing for works. The appearance of the sign and the announcement that the crossing will be painted within weeks has been welcomed by residents and businesses.
Local resident Angela, who did not want to give her surname, said: “I am delighted to hear that the bridge is finally going to be painted. It has been an eyesore with graffiti for so long and although the graffiti was cleaned up a few months ago, it has not been painted for around 30 years at least. It was very nice as a resident to be involved in choosing the colours for the bridge which FUR conducted a poll on recently via social media. As well as the bridge, I understand the brickwork will be cleaned and essential maintenance works will also be carried out. We are also eagerly waiting to hear about further improvements to the station and platforms. We certainly hope this will be the start of many more improvements to the station and the Uxbridge Road in general and we thank the council and TfL for making this happen.”
Positive impact on local area
Another resident, Robbin Pierce, said: “Some buyers remain hesitant about moving into Shepherd’s Bush because of the appearance of Uxbridge Road. This bridge painting is a small but powerful sign of progress — visible proof that positive change is gaining momentum.”
Malik Zameer Awan, Store Manager at a nearby Nisa, said: “A clean, freshly painted bridge makes the area look more attractive, encouraging more people to visit and spend time nearby. It will also increase footfall as Shepherd’s Bush is a well known tourist area due to the Westfield shopping mall, O2 Empire, historic Shepherd’s Bush Market and Loftus Road Stadium (QPR). A well-maintained environment can encourage more visitors, benefiting cafés, convenience stores, restaurants, and other local shops. Removing graffiti can make customers feel the area is safer and better cared for and gives a higher confidence to local business towards ongoing regeneration. Local residents may be more likely to support nearby businesses when the neighbourhood looks cleaner and more welcoming. In the end, very warm congratulations to all stakeholders who had been involved in this campaign.”

No impact on Tube services
Tube services are not expected to be affected while the works are ongoing. Cllr Zarar Qayyum, Hammersmith and Fulham Cabinet Member for Enterprise and Skills, said: “Shepherd's Bush Market Tube station serves as a gateway to Uxbridge Road which is home to the historic Shepherd's Bush Market and cultural venues including Bush Hall and Bush Theatre – to name a few. We want it to be a pleasant place for residents and visitors. That’s why we’ve been working with residents to get the bridge repainted. We hope that TfL will now make urgent improvements to the station, which is very run-down. This is all part of our work to make Hammersmith and Fulham the best place to live, work and socialise.”
