London pubs open late for England v Mexico World Cup match

The Government has granted pubs special permission to open late for England's World Cup round of 16 match against Mexico, which kicks off at 1am on Monday. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that pubs across England and Wales can stay open until 5am for the game.

Pub chains release updated lists

MyLondon previously compiled a list of pubs opening late, but pub chains Wetherspoons, Greene King, and Fullers have since released updated lists of their venues showing the match. Greene King said more than 600 of its pubs across England will stay open late, while Marston's said more than 400 will be open.

Police criticism of late announcement

The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) criticized the timing of the Government's decision. In a joint statement, Chief Constable Mark Roberts, NPCC lead for football policing, and Acting Chief Constable Scott Green, NPCC lead for alcohol licensing and harm reduction, said the “late announcement” meant forces would have to make fresh plans and there would be less police available in communities. They also requested that England fans be considerate and drink “sensibly”.
