London Transport Museum is offering nostalgic trips on the Metropolitan Line this weekend, July 25-26, using heritage 1930s and 1950s tube carriages. Passengers can ride on a restored 1938 Metropolitan Line train or be pulled by the 1920s electric locomotive Sarah Siddons.
Two Vintage Train Options
The 1938 Metropolitan Line train has been restored in art deco style with red and green wool upholstery and retro light fittings. This was the first Underground stock to have all electrical equipment under the floor, increasing capacity and passenger space. It served London for nearly 50 years.
Alternatively, passengers can ride in 1950s carriages hauled by Sarah Siddons, a 1920s electric locomotive named after the 18th-century Welsh actress. Sarah Siddons is one of the few remaining electric locomotives and is usually only seen at special events. The coaches are ex-British Rail 4TC trailers with red upholstery.
Routes and Tickets
Both experiences depart from Amersham station. On Saturday, a return journey goes via Watford. On Sunday, the return service goes to Harrow-on-the-Hill. Single journeys to Harrow-on-the-Hill are available both days. For return journeys on the 1950s train, Sarah Siddons hauls half the journey and a Class 20 locomotive the rest.
Tickets start at £22 for adults, up to £40, with concession rates for children. Oyster cards are not accepted. More information is on the London Transport Museum website.
