Two Dead, Three Injured in A1 Head-On Crash

Two people have died and three suffered serious injuries after a devastating head-on crash on the A1 in Northumberland early Saturday morning. The incident occurred at around 4am at a junction north of Alnwick, when a Nissan and a Vauxhall collided head-on.

Fatalities and Injuries

The drivers of both vehicles – a woman in her 50s and a man in his 40s – died at the scene. Three passengers were rushed to hospital with serious injuries: two women in their 20s and a secondary-school-aged boy. One of the injured women and the boy were passengers in the Nissan, while the other woman was a passenger in the Vauxhall.

Police Investigation

Sergeant Alex Partington of Northumbria Police expressed his heartfelt condolences to all affected and confirmed an investigation is underway. Officers are appealing for witnesses, especially those with dashcam footage, to come forward. The road between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge was closed for about 10 hours but has since reopened.

Sergeant Partington said: 'Our investigation to establish the exact circumstances leading to this collision is now underway, and we are already conducting a range of enquiries. We are now appealing to any motorists or witnesses who were travelling in the area at this time to come forward. We are particularly keen to hear from those who have dashcam footage which may have captured the collision or this section of road in the moments leading up to it.'
