Stansted Airport Embraces Contactless Ticketing for Rail Travel

In a significant upgrade to its transport infrastructure, Stansted Airport is set to introduce contactless payment systems at its rail station next month, bringing it in line with other major London airports. This long-awaited development will allow passengers on the Stansted Express to simply tap in and tap out using contactless cards or devices, eliminating the need for pre-purchased tickets.

Ending Passenger Confusion and Penalties

The implementation of contactless ticketing addresses a persistent issue that has affected thousands of travelers annually. Many passengers arriving at Liverpool Street station have mistakenly assumed they could use contactless payments for their journey to Stansted, only to face fines of up to £100 for not having a valid ticket. According to estimates from watchdog London TravelWatch in 2019, approximately 16,000 passengers per year were penalized under this system.

The contactless system was originally scheduled for launch in December but experienced delays due to software complications. These technical issues have now been resolved, and the necessary equipment is prepared for deployment across the network.

Launch Details and Cost Implications

Contactless payments will become available on Sunday, March 8, specifically for journeys originating from London. The fare for a contactless ticket will mirror the standard day-of-travel price, currently around £21.90. While this offers unparalleled convenience, it is not the most economical option. Passengers who book in advance can secure tickets for as little as £9.90, and those eligible for railcard discounts or concession rates will find advance purchases more cost-effective.

It is important to note that the contactless system will not support Oyster cards, as the technology behind Oyster is considered outdated. Additionally, the tap-in tap-out functionality will be limited to routes from London and will not extend to services from Cambridge.

Expanded Network of Contactless Stations

The rollout will extend beyond Stansted Airport, encompassing nineteen additional stations across Hertfordshire and Essex. These locations will also begin accepting contactless payments from March 8, significantly broadening the reach of modern ticketing solutions in the region.

The full list of stations includes:

  • Billericay
  • Beaulieu Park
  • Bishop’s Stortford
  • Chelmsford
  • Harlow Mill
  • Harlow Town
  • Hatfield Peverel
  • Hockley
  • Ingatestone

  • Rochford
  • Roydon
  • Sawbridgeworth
  • Stansted Airport
  • Southend Victoria
  • Stansted Mountfitchet

This comprehensive upgrade marks a pivotal step in modernizing rail travel connectivity for one of London's key aviation hubs, streamlining the passenger experience and reducing inadvertent penalties.
