Four rescued after motorboat fire off Scilly coast

A dramatic search and rescue operation unfolded off the coast of the Isles of Scilly on Saturday evening after a 60-foot motorboat burst into flames following an engine explosion. Four people were safely evacuated by the RNLI lifeboat crew.

Blaze erupts 20 miles offshore

The vessel caught fire at approximately 5:30pm on July 4, 2026, when its engine exploded 20 miles from the Isles of Scilly. The RNLI St Mary's lifeboat was launched at 5:35pm after being tasked by the Coastguard. Upon arrival just over an hour later, the crew found the four people ready to evacuate, with a dinghy launched and grab bags packed.

The captain initially reported the fire was out and requested a tow to St Mary's, but rescuers deemed it too risky. He then attempted to start the vessel's remaining engine, believing the fire was linked to the other engine's turbo. Moments later, thick black smoke poured from the saloon.

Abandon vessel order

An RNLI spokesperson based at St Mary's said: 'The lifeboat crew stated to him to proceed with extreme caution with going anywhere near the engine bays, to which he said he could start it in the wheelhouse. The skipper had the intention that he could pass under escort by the lifeboat to an anchorage outside of any harbour. The engine was started and almost immediately black smoke started to come out of the saloon doors, so the engine was stopped again and all 4 were told to abandon the vessel immediately.'

The coxswain brought the lifeboat alongside, and the four individuals were extracted from the burning vessel. The lifeboat then quickly moved clear. After checking for injuries or smoke inhalation, the four were taken back to St Mary's harbour and landed onto the quay into the care of local friends.

Safe return

An RNLI spokesperson confirmed: 'St Marys RNLI station launched after being tasked by the Coastguard at 5.35pm to an incident off the coast of the Isle of Scilly which involved a motorboat on fire. Four people were brought back to safety on the RNLI lifeboat.'
