Girlguiding redesigns uniforms for self-expression

Girlguiding has announced a major redesign of its uniforms, shifting focus to self-expression and confidence. The new kit, launching in 2027, replaces the traditional one-size-fits-all approach with a flexible system offering multiple clothing options for each of its four sections: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers.

New uniform options

The redesign includes a choice of tops, bottoms, and accessories. For example, Brownies can choose between a blue polo shirt, a hoodie, or a tunic, paired with trousers, skirts, or shorts. The previous uniform required all members to wear a specific dress or skirt. The new range also features a wider size range, including plus sizes, and uses more sustainable fabrics.

According to Girlguiding, the changes were driven by feedback from over 10,000 members. A survey found that 78% of girls wanted uniforms that allow them to express their individuality. The organization also noted that the old uniform made some members feel uncomfortable or self-conscious.

Confidence and identity

Angela Salt, CEO of Girlguiding, said: "We want every girl to feel confident and proud to wear her uniform. This redesign is about giving girls the freedom to choose what makes them feel good, while still feeling part of something bigger." The new uniforms also incorporate the charity's updated logo and color palette, which are designed to be more modern and inclusive.

The move is part of a broader effort to modernize the organization, which has seen declining membership in recent years. Girlguiding currently has around 370,000 members in the UK, down from over 500,000 a decade ago. The new uniforms are expected to be available for purchase from spring 2027, with a phased rollout across all sections.
