Bill Oddie, the naturalist, broadcaster, and former member of the comedy group the Goodies, has died at the age of 84, his family has announced.
Pioneering Birdwatcher and TV Presenter
Oddie died peacefully at his home in London on Monday, surrounded by his family, according to a statement released by his agent. The cause of death was not disclosed.
He was best known for his work as a naturalist and birdwatcher, presenting the BBC series Springwatch and Autumnwatch for many years. He also wrote numerous books on birdwatching and wildlife.
Comedy Career with The Goodies
Before his nature career, Oddie was one third of the comedy trio the Goodies, alongside Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden. The group had a popular television series from 1970 to 1982, known for its surreal humour and slapstick.
Oddie was also a musician and songwriter, composing the theme tune for The Goodies and writing songs for the show.
Impact and Legacy
Oddie's passion for birdwatching began as a child and he became one of Britain's most respected naturalists. He was awarded an MBE in 2003 for services to wildlife conservation.
“Bill was a true original, a brilliant naturalist who brought the joy of birdwatching to millions,” said a spokesperson for the RSPB. “He will be greatly missed.”
Oddie is survived by his wife, Laura, and three children.
