Patrick Vieira, the iconic former Arsenal captain, has stirred debate by suggesting that five members of Mikel Arteta's current squad would be worthy of a place in the legendary Invincibles team. The 2003-04 Arsenal side, managed by Arsene Wenger, remains the only Premier League team to complete an entire season unbeaten, winning 26 matches and drawing 12 to finish with 90 points while conceding just 26 goals. That historic campaign marked Arsenal's last league title, but the current squad is now on the brink of ending that drought, needing only a win at Crystal Palace on Sunday to secure the championship—or even earlier if Manchester City drop points against Bournemouth.
Vieira's Combined XI
Speaking to Sky Sports, Vieira outlined his ideal starting lineup blending the Invincibles with the current team. He named David Raya as his goalkeeper ahead of Jens Lehmann, and Jurrien Timber at right-back over Lauren. In central defence, Vieira kept Sol Campbell but replaced Kolo Toure with Gabriel. Ashley Cole retained his left-back spot, while Bukayo Saka earned a place on the right wing ahead of Freddie Ljungberg. Up front, Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp were untouchable. In midfield, Vieira selected Declan Rice alongside himself, keeping Robert Pires on the left. Notably, he omitted Gilberto Silva, William Saliba, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz.
Managerial Verdict
When asked to choose between Arsene Wenger and Mikel Arteta, Vieira praised Arteta's work in transforming the team but ultimately sided with his former boss. "Arteta did a really good job, taking the team a couple of years ago and seeing where it is today," Vieira said. "He also spent a lot of money. Regarding Arsene, I think Arsene brought myself and Thierry on really good deals, so for that I’d say Arsene will be the manager."
The debate over which Arsenal era reigns supreme continues to captivate fans, with Vieira's comments adding fresh fuel to the discussion as the current team chases glory.
