Mike Flanagan, the acclaimed horror director behind The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher, is in talks to write and executive produce a Warhammer 40,000 television series for Amazon Prime Video, with Henry Cavill attached to star, according to Deadline.
Flanagan joins Warhammer 40K project
Games Workshop, the Nottingham-based miniatures company behind the tabletop strategy game Warhammer, has drafted Flanagan to develop the series. The project has been in development since December 2022, when Cavill was announced as helping to develop a Warhammer Cinematic Universe for Amazon. In 2024, Cavill shared an update on Instagram, stating that creative guidelines had been agreed upon and that the starting point for the universe would remain a secret for now.
According to Deadline, Flanagan is now in talks to serve as executive producer, showrunner, writer, and director for the series, which is expected to star Cavill, likely as a Space Marine or Inquisitor.
Why Flanagan and Cavill are a perfect fit
Deputy TV Editor Tom Percival expressed excitement over the pairing, calling it a match made in heaven. Flanagan's understanding of the uncanny and eerie, as demonstrated in films like Oculus—which plays with perception and dread—makes him an ideal fit for the grimdark world of Warhammer 40,000. Cavill, a self-proclaimed nerd who once compared a chandelier to a Blackstone Fortress, is trusted to bring authenticity to the project.
Warhammer 40,000 is set in a hostile galaxy where humanity has become a brutal theocratic regime serving the Corpse Emperor, with billions of lives lost daily. Despite the darkness, Percival notes that there are flickers of good in the stories, which Flanagan is well-suited to explore.
