USWNT's 'Triple Espresso' Reunites for Friendlies Against Brazil After 21 Months
USWNT's 'Triple Espresso' Reunites for Brazil Friendlies

The United States women's national team is set to reunite its dynamic attacking trio, known as the "Triple Espresso," for the first time since the 2024 Paris Olympics. Mallory Swanson, Sophia Wilson, and Trinity Rodman will feature together in a pair of friendlies against Brazil next month, as announced by the federation on Wednesday. The trio powered the USWNT to a gold medal in Paris, scoring 10 of the team's 12 goals during the tournament.

However, a combination of injuries and pregnancy layoffs meant that 21 months passed before the three forwards appeared on the same roster again. Swanson and Wilson both announced pregnancies last spring and did not play for club or country in 2025. Wilson returned for the Portland Thorns in April and featured in all three of the USWNT's friendlies against Japan last month. Swanson, who last played for the national team in October 2024, scored off the bench for the Chicago Stars last weekend in her second game back.

Hayes Emphasizes Preparation for World Cup Qualifying

Head coach Emma Hayes expressed excitement about having the trio back together, stating, "It's fantastic for our team, both on and off the field, to have Trinity and our two soccer moms back on the same roster." However, she also highlighted the importance of preparing for World Cup qualifying, adding, "We need to build connections between players, and with limited time before qualifying, every minute counts."

While Swanson and Wilson took last year off, Rodman managed back issues and an MCL injury, appearing in all eight of the USWNT's matches so far this year. The 24-year-old captained the team in a January friendly against Paraguay and recorded four goal contributions.

New Talents Emerge in Attack

In the absence of the established stars, new players have broken through in the attacking line. Ally Sentnor, a 22-year-old forward for Kansas City Current, leads the team with three goals this year. Emma Sears (Racing Louisville) has two, and Alyssa Thompson (Chelsea) has one.

Roster Changes and Notable Absences

Hayes's 26-player roster also sees the return of midfielders Croix Bethune and Riley Jackson, as well as center-back Tara Rudd, all of whom were not in the squad for the April friendlies. Goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn returns after rehabbing a hand injury; she made three appearances for the national team last year and has helped the Utah Royals to a surprise first-place spot in the NWSL.

Notable absences include center-back Naomi Girma, who missed the end of Chelsea's season with a calf injury, and midfielder Sam Coffey, who underwent minor knee surgery at the end of Manchester City's campaign.

Friendlies Against Brazil

The US will face Brazil, hosts of next summer's Women's World Cup, on June 6 in São Paulo and June 9 in Fortaleza. The team traditionally takes a road trip before the World Cup to play the host country in tournament venues. Brazil are a regular opponent for the US, but matches between the teams in Brazil are less common; the two sides last played in Brazil in a friendly tournament in December 2014.

"Few challenges in women's international soccer compare to facing Brazil in Brazil, so we're excited for the valuable lessons this experience will bring," Hayes said.
