Transport for London (TfL) has opened a public consultation on a proposed 18.5km London Overground line that would run between Hendon and Hounslow, a route currently used only by freight trains. The West London Orbital project, if approved, could support the delivery of 25,000 new homes, 11,500 jobs, and add £1.3 billion to the wider economy, while removing 650,000 car journeys from the road each year.
Consultation opens for West London Orbital
Londoners are being invited to share their views on the scheme from Wednesday, September 23, until Wednesday, November 18, 2026. TfL describes the new overground route as a “key missing link” in the capital’s rail network, improving connections between Brent Cross, Neasden, Harlesden, Old Oak Common, Acton, Brentford and Hounslow.
The plans are still in the early stages. TfL agreed earlier this year to provide £6.5 million to support the next phase of design, modelling, and public consultation.
New stations and upgrades planned
Newly proposed stations for the line include Neasden, Harlesden, Old Oak Common Lane and Lionel Road. In addition to these new stations, TfL is also looking to improve a number of existing stations to support the West London Orbital service.
David Rowe, TfL’s Director of Investment Planning, said: “This consultation is an important opportunity for people to shape the future of this new London Overground route. By making better use of existing rail infrastructure, we can improve connections between communities and support growth across west and northwest London.”
He added: “We want to ensure that everyone understands the proposals and has the opportunity to share their views. All feedback will be carefully considered as we continue to develop the scheme with our partners.”
Political and local support for the project
Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor of London for Transport, said: “The Mayor and I are delighted that TfL is taking this important first step in proposals to add a brand-new line to the London Overground network, utilising a line currently only used for freight to transform travel in north and northwest London.”
He continued: “As well as connecting communities and improving access to vital places like schools, hospitals and transport hubs, this innovative rail project means we can drive regeneration and growth not only along the new route but across our great city – unlocking homes, jobs and opportunities.”
Dance also encouraged Londoners to participate in the consultation, saying it would help shape “this exciting new transport connection as we continue building a better, greener, more prosperous London for everyone.”
Erin Walsh, Director at West London Alliance, said: “This could unlock west London's economic potential, connecting people and places across the sub-region. As the partnership of the seven west London local authorities, we encourage everyone with an interest in west London to have their say and help shape this once-in-a-generation opportunity.”
The West London Orbital is named because it would run around London rather than straight into the centre, forming “a kind of arc through West and Northwest London,” according to TfL. The consultation will run until November 18, 2026, and all feedback will be considered as TfL works with partners to develop the scheme further.
