Uruguay's Silva Makes History with Giro d'Italia Stage Win After Crash
Uruguay's Silva Wins Giro Stage After Crash

Guillermo Thomas Silva won stage two of the Giro d'Italia to become the first Uruguayan to win a Grand Tour stage after a dramatic sprint finish, following a crash involving nearly 20 riders that disrupted the hilly, rain-soaked 221 km ride from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria.

Historic Victory

Silva, riding for XDS Astana, claimed the pink jersey from stage one winner Paul Magnier of France after a photo-finish sprint. "This is only the second stage of my first Giro d'Italia and I'm the winner. It was a bit unexpected. I'm speechless," said Silva.

Crash Disrupts Race

The race was temporarily neutralized after a crash around the 198 km mark, which left several riders injured and forced Australian Jay Vine and Norwegian Adne Holter to abandon. Spaniard Florian Stork finished second, and Giulio Ciccone of Italy was third. The crash began when Marc Soler appeared to hit slippery ground, causing a chain reaction that sent riders into a guard rail.

Early Breakaway and Chase

The stage started without Matteo Moschetti, who abandoned after a crash on Friday. Mirco Maestri and Diego Pablo Sevilla attacked early, building a five-minute lead over the peloton. They remained unchallenged through the climbs to Byala Pass and Vratnik Pass, but the peloton gradually reeled them in, catching them with 27 km left as the weather cleared.

Aftermath and Final Sprint

Vine, the Australian Tour Down Under champion, was taken away on a stretcher, while Soler also ended up in hospital. The race resumed with 18.2 km left, and Jonas Vingegaard attacked on the Lyaskovets monastery pass, opening a gap before being chased down. With half a kilometer to go, the peloton caught the leaders, setting up a frantic sprint where Silva prevailed.

"I just had to keep calm and launch the sprint at the right time ... this is the maximum I could hope for," Silva said. The race continues Sunday with a 175 km flat stage from Plovdiv to Sofia before heading to Italy for Tuesday's ride from Catanzaro to Cosenza.
