Thomas Tuchel left Cole Palmer out of England's World Cup squad due to what sources describe as reservations over the Chelsea star's personality. The 26-man group was officially confirmed at Wembley on Friday morning, with Palmer, Phil Foden, and Harry Maguire among the most notable omissions.
Surprise Exclusions
Palmer's exclusion came despite a season that, while underwhelming by his high standards, still yielded 10 goals and three assists. However, his form was not the only factor. According to reports, Tuchel placed particular emphasis on squad personality, feeling Palmer's 'face does not fit.' Foden, who also endured a difficult season at Manchester City, is said to be viewed similarly.
Other notable absentees include Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw, Adam Wharton, and Morgan Gibbs-White. Tuchel's squad instead features elder statesmen like Dan Burn (34) and Jordan Henderson (35), both regarded as influential dressing-room figures.
Maguire's Frustration
Harry Maguire, who has been in excellent form for Manchester United under Michael Carrick, expressed shock and disappointment at his omission. 'I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision,' Maguire said. 'I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer.'
Tuchel is expected to address the media following the squad announcement to explain his bold selections.
