The Spygate controversy surrounding the Championship playoff semi-final between Middlesbrough and Southampton has escalated, with Boro manager Kim Hellberg branding their opponents 'cheats' after an analyst allegedly spied on his team's training session.
Post-Match Confrontation
Southampton manager Tonda Eckert walked out of a press conference at Middlesbrough on Saturday after repeatedly refusing to answer questions about the incident. The English Football League (EFL) has charged Southampton with misconduct, and a disciplinary commission will review the case before Tuesday's second leg.
Hellberg's Outrage
Hellberg did not hold back in his criticism. 'It's just unfair. It's not OK. There was anger. There's a loss of respect,' he said. 'It makes me disappointed. It was a big game and they saw everything we were doing – set pieces, goal-kicks, everything.' The Swede claimed the spying gave Southampton a 'massive advantage' in the first half, as Boro used a new shape that had never been seen before.
Hellberg also expressed sympathy for Southampton's supporters and players, stating they 'do not deserve to have this thrown back at them.' However, he insisted someone at the club made a deliberate decision to cheat, calling for more than just a fine as punishment.
Match Report
The first leg at the Riverside ended in a 0-0 draw, with Middlesbrough dominating much of the play. Southampton managed to hold on for a stalemate, but the off-field drama has overshadowed the result.
In other League One playoff action, Stockport County secured a 1-0 win over Stevenage thanks to a last-minute goal from Ben Osborn, while Bolton Wanderers beat Bradford City 1-0 with Amario Cozier-Duberry scoring the winner.
