Alan Shearer Backs Levi Colwill for England World Cup Recall After FA Cup Final
Shearer Backs Colwill for England World Cup Return

Alan Shearer has praised Levi Colwill's performance in Chelsea's FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, suggesting the defender may have played his way into England's World Cup squad. Colwill, who suffered a severe anterior cruciate ligament injury in training last August, missed seven months of action. The 23-year-old returned earlier this month and has impressed in limited appearances.

Colwill's Comeback

Colwill's injury required surgery and sidelined him for the entire tenure of former manager Liam Rosenior. His last appearance before the injury was in Chelsea's Club World Cup final victory over Paris Saint-Germain. Interim boss Calum McFarlane eased him back with a 45-minute outing against Nottingham Forest, followed by a start in the 1-1 draw at Liverpool.

Colwill started again in Saturday's FA Cup final, playing the full match in a back-three alongside Wesley Fofana and Jorrel Hato. Despite Antoine Semenyo's 72nd-minute winner for City, Colwill delivered a solid performance, earning praise from McFarlane and pundits alike.

McFarlane's Caution

McFarlane emphasized the need for caution with Colwill's reintegration. 'We need to be careful with Levi,' he said ahead of Chelsea's match against Tottenham. 'He's off the back of a very serious injury and has performed well in those two games. We'll see how he looks today and make a decision.' McFarlane added that Colwill has shown 'really good mental strength' and that his return is 'great for English football.'

Shearer's Verdict

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Shearer said: 'I thought Colwill played really well for Chelsea and I think he might have played himself into the England squad. I thought he was excellent.' However, Shearer noted the risk of selecting both Colwill and John Stones, given Colwill's lengthy absence. 'If you're going to take John Stones, will you take a risk on someone who has been out for a long time?' he questioned.

Shearer also commented on the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea's permanent manager, noting that Alonso's title as 'manager' rather than 'coach' suggests he will have significant control over transfers and club operations. 'He's never going to be in a stronger position than he is at the minute,' Shearer said, adding that Alonso will aim to bring stability to a 'bonkers' club.

Colwill will hope to continue his strong form and secure a place in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man World Cup squad, which is set to be announced this Friday.
