Second Manchester United Star Plans Summer Exit from Old Trafford
Joshua Zirkzee has decided to leave Manchester United this summer after failing to secure a regular place in Michael Carrick's team. The Netherlands international, who joined from Bologna for £36 million 18 months ago, has started only four matches across all competitions this season.
Limited Opportunities Under Carrick
The forward enjoyed a brief period in the side during November and December when injuries sidelined Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. However, his minutes have since dried up, with his last start coming in Ruben Amorim's penultimate game in charge at the end of December, where he was substituted at halftime.
Zirkzee was reportedly considering a move in January, but Amorim's departure and Carrick's subsequent appointment halted any transfer business. With his prospects unlikely to improve under Carrick, who is favored to secure the permanent managerial role, an exit now appears imminent.
Potential Return to Italy
According to reports, Zirkzee is eyeing a summer move, with a return to Italy being a possible option. The 24-year-old has scored nine goals in 69 appearances for United but has struggled to impress as a traditional number nine, especially with Sesko established as the first-choice striker.
In deeper roles, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have been more productive, and Bruno Fernandes has returned to his preferred position behind the striker under Carrick's management.
Major Summer Overhaul Expected at Old Trafford
Zirkzee's departure is part of a broader exodus expected at Manchester United this summer. Casemiro has already confirmed he will leave when his contract expires, and replacing the Brazilian midfielder is a top priority, with Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson under consideration.
Harry Maguire is in the final months of his contract, but United are in talks over a new deal. Additionally, Jadon Sancho will depart upon contract expiration, and Marcus Rashford is expected to make a permanent move to Barcelona after a loan spell. Rasmus Hojlund is set to join Napoli permanently if the Serie A side qualifies for the Champions League.
