Gary Neville's Media Network Acquires Prominent Manchester United YouTube Channels
Former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville is continuing his ambitious expansion into the sports media landscape with a significant acquisition for his network, The Overlap. The company has purchased the popular YouTube channels operated by Manchester United fan content creator Mark Goldbridge in a deal reportedly valued at seven figures.
Building a Football Media Powerhouse
This strategic move represents another step in Neville's efforts to establish a formidable independent football media community. The acquisition brings Goldbridge's two primary YouTube channels—The United Stand and That's Football—under The Overlap umbrella. These channels collectively boast an impressive audience of 3.7 million subscribers and have recently expanded their content offerings to include live coverage of Bundesliga matches.
Gary Neville emphasized the strategic vision behind the acquisition: "We are building what we believe will become one of the most exciting independent football communities in the world—one that gives fans direct, personality-led content. The United Stand and That's Football are two of the best-known football channels on YouTube, and our intention is to develop them into the most compelling Manchester United and football news channels in the market."
The Overlap's Rapid Expansion
The Overlap has experienced remarkable growth since its inception as a single YouTube channel. The network now encompasses multiple sports programming formats including:
- The flagship show Stick To Football featuring Neville alongside regular guests Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, Ian Wright, and Jill Scott
- The Overlap Interviews offering in-depth conversations with personalities from sports, business, and politics
- Specialized spin-offs including Stick To Cricket and Stick To Rugby
Collectively, The Overlap's programming generated an extraordinary 2.2 billion views last year, averaging approximately 38 million monthly views across its various platforms.
Competition in Football Media Landscape
Neville's media expansion places him in direct competition with fellow former footballer Gary Lineker's established media empire, Goalhanger. Lineker's network hosts several highly successful podcasts including The Rest Is Football, The Rest Is Politics, and The Rest Is History, along with acquired properties such as Football Cliches.
Goalhanger's content achieved approximately 500 million downloads and listens last year, demonstrating the substantial audience for football-focused digital media. Lineker has recently shifted his focus entirely to his Goalhanger business following his departure from the BBC's Match of the Day after decades as presenter, and has secured a deal with Netflix to present Stick To Football content during the upcoming World Cup.
Corporate Structure and Future Plans
The Goldbridge acquisition follows media giant Global's majority takeover of The Overlap earlier this year. Despite the corporate restructuring, Neville retains his position as co-chair and executive director with specific responsibilities for identifying strategic acquisition targets. Goldbridge, whose real name is Brent Di Cesare, brings a unique background to the partnership as a 47-year-old former police officer who has become the most prominent independent creator of online content focused on Manchester United.
This acquisition represents a significant consolidation in the football media space, bringing together traditional broadcasting expertise with digital-native content creation. The combination of Neville's industry connections and production experience with Goldbridge's direct fan engagement and digital platform mastery creates a powerful synergy in the increasingly competitive sports media market.
