Lottery grant helps Hornsey seniors stay active

West Haringey Seniors Exercise Class (WHSEC) has been awarded £2,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund, securing its future for at least the next two years. The weekly class, which meets Thursday afternoons at Hornsey Vale Community Centre, has been running for 16 years and serves older exercisers aged 60 to 90.

Lesley Chrysanthou, co-founder of WHSEC with Ann Anderson, said the funding news brought gratitude, delight and relief. Many participants are also members of The Hornsey Pensioners Action Group (HPAG).

Funding secures two more years of weekly sessions

The grant ensures the class can continue comfortably, according to Chrysanthou. The group's trainer, Jeff, specialises in later life fitness and delivers a balanced weekly programme tailored to each participant's abilities.

Participants report tangible benefits, including eased back problems and renewed mobility. One member said: "I may go to the class not feeling like exercising but come out afterwards feeling energised and buzzing." Another noted: "I realised recently I was running up the stairs again!"

Social connections beyond exercise

The class also fosters social bonds. After sessions, members often gather at a local café for tea, cake and conversation. The group is described as friendly and welcoming, with one participant joking: "No-one wears Lycra!"

Jeff's approach has drawn praise for its humour and attentiveness. As one member put it: "Jeff delivers the classes with a great sense of humour. He is very attuned to the needs of individual class members. Ideal for those who may be a bit timid or reluctant."

Recognition for community impact

Chrysanthou expressed appreciation that the National Lottery Community Fund recognised the group's positive impact on the local community. She noted that regular, low-cost exercise improves strength and balance, helping older adults stay active longer.

She thanked lottery players for their contribution to the group's continuance. For more information on WHSEC, contact Lesley Chrysanthou on 07967 089078. For HPAG details, visit www.hornseypensionersactiongroup.org or email HornseyPensioners.AG@outlook.com.
