Paul Merson's Title Race Prediction: Arsenal to Seal Deal This Weekend

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has made a bold prediction that the Premier League title race could be effectively "done" this weekend. Merson believes Arsenal will extend their lead at the top while Manchester City will stumble in their pursuit, potentially ending the championship battle.

Arsenal's Crucial Clash Against Everton

Arsenal currently hold a commanding seven-point advantage at the Premier League summit as they prepare to host Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The Gunners are chasing their first league title in 22 years and have shown resilience after a minor wobble last month.

"Everton are a funny team, they play some good football away from home and are often hard to beat on their travels," Merson told Sportskeeda. "It's crazy how they sometimes get ripped to shreds in games and still get a result!"

Despite acknowledging Everton's decent away record and recent form of two consecutive victories, Merson expects Arsenal to prevail in what he anticipates will be a closely contested match. He predicts a 2-1 victory for Mikel Arteta's side, which would temporarily extend their lead to ten points.

Manchester City's West Ham Challenge

The title race could take a decisive turn when Manchester City visit West Ham later on Saturday. City have experienced recent setbacks, including a disappointing draw against Nottingham Forest and a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

"After the loss against Real Madrid, this has become a really tough game for Manchester City," Merson explained. "If City don't beat West Ham this weekend and Arsenal win against Everton, the title race is done!"

Merson believes the psychological impact of the Real Madrid defeat will affect City's performance, predicting a 2-2 draw against a West Ham side fighting relegation but showing improved form with just one loss in their last five league matches.

Recent Form and Title Implications

Arsenal have responded strongly to criticism after dropping points against Brentford and Wolves last month, securing three consecutive Premier League victories against Tottenham, Chelsea, and Brighton. Their midweek Champions League performance against Bayer Leverkusen raised some concerns, but Merson expects them to bounce back domestically.

"Arsenal haven't been great in recent weeks," Merson admitted. "My god, they were lucky to get that draw against Bayer Leverkusen. They don't play free-flowing football. I expect Arsenal to be far too good for Leverkusen at the Emirates, but at the moment, I'm still a bit worried about them."

For Manchester City, the stakes couldn't be higher. Merson warned that failure to secure victory against West Ham could see them eliminated from multiple competitions within days, leaving only the FA Cup as potential silverware this season.

The reverse fixtures saw Arsenal secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton thanks to a Viktor Gyokeres penalty, while Manchester City dominated West Ham 3-0 earlier in the campaign. This weekend's results could determine whether the title race continues or reaches its conclusion with several games remaining.
