Midfielder Recommends Former Teammate for Serie A Move
Scott McTominay has personally advised Napoli manager Antonio Conte to pursue a deal for Manchester United's talented young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. The Scotland international, who has flourished since his own £45 million move to the Italian club 18 months ago, believes his former teammate would be an excellent addition to the Serie A squad.
McTominay, who played a crucial role in Napoli's league triumph last season, reportedly provided Conte with a detailed assessment of Mainoo's abilities during a recent meeting. A source close to the situation revealed: 'Scott has been to see Conte and told him to get Kobbie. He's told him all about his strengths and what an outstanding player he is.'
Promising Talent Facing Reduced Role at United
Mainoo's situation at Manchester United has become increasingly uncertain following the appointment of new manager Ruben Amorim. The 20-year-old, who made a spectacular breakthrough under previous boss Erik ten Hag, has seen his opportunities dramatically reduced this season.
The England international, who was part of the squad that reached the Euro 2024 final, has managed just eight appearances this campaign. His only start came in the embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby, highlighting his diminished status within the squad.
United came close to allowing Mainoo's departure during the summer transfer window and were reportedly willing to consider offers around £45 million. Chelsea showed interest but ultimately focused their efforts on securing another United youngster, Alejandro Garnacho.
January Transfer Window Looms for Midfield Prospect
With his playing time severely limited, Mainoo is expected to attract significant attention when the transfer window reopens in January. His prospects of featuring in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad are diminishing due to his lack of match action.
The source added that McTominay believes Mainoo would adapt quickly to life in Italy, noting: 'Kobbie has been brought up the right way at United having been in the academy since he was a little boy. He would fit straight in and give Napoli a boost.'
Conte has already demonstrated his willingness to recruit from Old Trafford, having secured Rasmus Hojlund on loan during the summer. The Napoli boss appears to be building a squad with strong Premier League connections, and Mainoo could become the latest addition to this growing contingent.
