Johan Manzambi came off the bench to score twice as Switzerland came from behind to crush 10-man Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 in their World Cup 2026 Group B clash in Los Angeles. The 20-year-old Freiburg forward, who endured a disappointing Europa League final defeat to Aston Villa last month, made an instant impact after being introduced as part of a triple substitution in the 73rd minute.
Manzambi's instant impact
Within 166 seconds of entering the field, Manzambi produced a stunning volley to break the deadlock. He latched onto a headed clearance from Amar Memic and hooked a right-foot shot past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. The goal was a relief for Switzerland, who had struggled to convert chances in their opening draw against Qatar and again in the first half against Bosnia.
Second goal and red card
Manzambi doubled his tally with a composed finish after a flowing move, and then turned provider with a delicate pass that released Breel Embolo. Embolo was brought down by Tarik Muharemovic, who received a red card, leaving Bosnia with 10 men. Ruben Vargas and Granit Xhaka added further goals, with Xhaka converting a late penalty after Djibril Sow was fouled by Memic.
Bosnia's consolation
Ermin Mahmic scored a consolation goal for Bosnia in stoppage time, crashing home a volley from a partially cleared corner, but it was too little too late. The result leaves Switzerland in a strong position to advance from Group B, while Bosnia's hopes now rest on their final group game against Qatar.
Switzerland coach Murat Yakin praised Manzambi's street football upbringing, saying: "He learned how to play on the streets. He needs to be more structured, but he is making headway. He puts a lot of pressure on opponents and can surprise us as well."
