A serving student police officer with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and raping a woman. The 23-year-old trainee was detained on Saturday evening following a police pursuit, the force confirmed.
Incident and Arrest
The alarm was raised at 10:18pm on Saturday when a woman called 999 'in distress' from a vehicle. Responding officers traced the suspected vehicle and initiated a chase. The vehicle was eventually stopped, and the student officer was arrested on suspicion of kidnap, rape, and dangerous driving.
The officer, who was still in training, has been suspended from duty and remains in Greater Manchester custody for questioning. The force has made a voluntary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is standard in such cases.
Victim Safeguarded
The victim, a woman in her 20s, was safeguarded at the scene and is receiving support. Assistant Chief Constable Mark Dexter described the incident as 'deeply concerning and disturbing' and emphasised that specialist resources are being used to ensure the victim receives justice.
Dexter stated: 'This is quite clearly a deeply concerning and disturbing incident that we are fully investigating with specialist resources to ensure the victim receives support and justice.' He added that the force is committed to working with the Crown Prosecution Service to bring the case to court as quickly as possible and to accelerate misconduct proceedings.
Vetting and Misconduct
The Professional Standards Directorate has conducted an initial review and found that the officer's vetting was completed without any reason for concern. However, Dexter stressed that this does not lessen the severity of the allegations. 'All necessary and decisive action will be taken in the interest of the victim and the public,' he said.
Dexter also acknowledged the shock and anger within the force, noting that thousands of GMP officers work daily to protect the public. 'I know they, like me, will be shocked and angered by this news,' he added.
