Harry Maguire's mother has expressed her fury after her son was omitted from England's World Cup squad by manager Thomas Tuchel. The 26-man roster for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada is set to be officially announced on Friday, but leaks have already revealed several high-profile omissions.
Maguire himself broke the news on Thursday evening, taking to social media to vent his frustration. The Manchester United defender wrote: "I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer."
His mother, Zoe, echoed his sentiments, replying to his post with: "Absolutely disgusted. You couldn't have done anymore. Hold your head high… Disgraceful."
According to leaks, the centre-backs selected ahead of Maguire are Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, John Stones, and Dan Burn, with Chelsea's Levi Colwill also left out. Maguire was a key figure under former manager Gareth Southgate, playing a crucial role in England's run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final. He started every game at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but missed Euro 2024 due to injury.
This season, Maguire's campaign was interrupted by injury early on, but after Michael Carrick took over at United in January, he became a near-ever-present in the starting XI, missing only two games since mid-January due to suspension. His form helped Manchester United secure third place in the Premier League and qualification for the Champions League.
