N'Golo Kante in Talks for Shock Europa League Return from Saudi Arabia
Kante in Talks for Fenerbahce Move from Saudi Arabia

In a surprising twist, Chelsea icon N'Golo Kante could be set for a dramatic return to European football this January. The 34-year-old French midfielder, currently playing for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, is reportedly in advanced talks with Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahce.

From Stamford Bridge to Istanbul?

N'Golo Kante made the move to Saudi Arabia in June 2023 on a free transfer after his celebrated contract with Chelsea ended. During his time at Stamford Bridge, the tenacious midfielder made 269 appearances, securing a glittering collection of trophies including the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, and FA Cup.

His legendary career also features a World Cup win with France in 2018 and a historic Premier League title with Leicester City in 2016. He added a Saudi Pro League title and King's Cup to his honours list in 2025 with Al-Ittihad.

Transfer Talks Gather Pace

According to reports from TalkSPORT and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Fenerbahce have begun negotiations with Al-Ittihad for a January switch. Romano adds that there has been a 'direct meeting' with the player's representatives, and contract terms have already been offered.

While a deal is not yet finalised, discussions are ongoing. Kante's current contract in Saudi Arabia is set to expire in the summer of 2026, which could facilitate a move. Al-Ittihad are said to be open to his departure as they have already filled all nine permitted over-21 foreign player slots in their squad, and his exit would free up space for another high-profile signing.

Fenerbahce's Premier League Connection

A move to Istanbul would see Kante join a squad with strong Premier League connections. Fenerbahce's roster already includes former Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, ex-Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, and former Manchester United player Fred. The club also has John Duran on loan from Al-Nassr and Cenk Tosun, who previously played for Everton.

Kante has remained a regular for Al-Ittihad this season, making 21 appearances, but the team has struggled, currently sitting sixth in the league table.

"It's Not Over" - Kante's European Hint

The potential transfer aligns with comments Kante made 18 months ago, after starring for France at Euro 2024. When asked if his European career was finished, he replied, "No, it's not over." He described his time in Saudi Arabia as "new football, a new experience" but left the door firmly open for a return.

If completed, this move would mark a sensational comeback to a major European competition for the tireless midfielder, with Fenerbahce competing in this season's Europa League.
