Harry Potter TV series casts Peeves, cut from films

Harry Potter fans have gone wild after the upcoming TV series cast a major character that was cut from the original movies. The HBO production has cast Peter Serafinowicz as Peeves the Poltergeist, the cheeky ghoul known for causing mischief in the corridors of Hogwarts.

The 53-year-old actor, known for roles in Parks and Recreation, Shaun of the Dead, and Guardians of the Galaxy, recently appeared in Amandaland and The Gentlemen, as well as the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon.

Mixed reactions from fans

The news has sparked a mixed response on social media. Some fans expressed disappointment, echoing reactions to previous casting announcements for the divisive adaptation, partly due to author J.K. Rowling's controversial stance on transgender issues.

However, others were thrilled to see Peeves finally brought to screen. User Jaybee wrote: 'PEEVES!! I can't believe they're actually casting his character in the show. Justice!' Another fan, @BlackMajikMan90, commented: 'This is why the Harry Potter HBO show exists.'

On Reddit, Serafinowicz was praised for his comedic talent. User dannypan said: 'Really good choice, he's an extremely good impressionist so he'll be great at mocking everyone by copying their voices. An under-appreciated comedian imo.'

Peeves originally cast with Rik Mayall

Peeves was originally cast with the late British comedian Rik Mayall for the film series, but his role was cut for time. Mayall recalled in a 2014 interview: 'I did a little bit of filming then I went home and got the money – significant – then a month later they said “Rik, sorry about this, you're not in the film.”' He was offered tickets to the premiere but gave them to his children, who thought he was playing Hagrid due to the makeup.

The Harry Potter TV adaptation is set to premiere on Christmas Day.
