Reggie Bannister, the actor best known for his iconic role in the Phantasm horror franchise, has died at the age of 80. His family confirmed that he passed away after a battle with Parkinson's disease, surrounded by loved ones at his mountain home.
Family Confirms Passing
In a statement released by his family, they said: 'Reggie Bannister fought debilitating effects of Parkinson's while resting comfortably in his Mountain home with caregivers and Gigi by his side.' The statement continued: '[His wife] Gigi was with him till the end, as she had vowed, until death and meant it. Reggie's final request was to please let his fans know, "It's never over."'
Gigi Bannister also shared an emotional tribute on Facebook, writing: 'He looked so quiet and peaceful. Like he was asleep. In his bed, "In Our Mountain Home" as his song goes.' She added: 'In the snap of fingers, my best friend, my confidant, my partner, my soul mate was transitioned to another dimension – a higher plane.'
Career Highlights
Bannister's breakout role came in the 1979 supernatural horror film Phantasm, where he portrayed Reggie, a former ice cream man turned gun-wielding hero. He reprised the role in several sequels, most recently in 2016's Phantasm: Ravager.
Beyond the franchise, Bannister appeared in films such as Wishmaster, Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation, Cemetery Gates, Sawblad, and The Obsidian Curse, according to IMDb.
Health Struggles and Military Service
In the same year as his final Phantasm appearance, Bannister was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease. His wife Gigi told TMZ that his health issues were linked to Agent Orange exposure during his military service in the Vietnam War.
Bannister was also a prolific musician, releasing six albums across rock, country, and folk genres. His fans remember him not only for his acting but for his music and his enduring message: 'It's never over.'
