Darren Fletcher has made the surprising decision to decline a position on Michael Carrick's coaching team, as the former midfielder prepares to take over as Manchester United's interim manager. Fletcher, who had been leading the first team in a caretaker capacity, will instead revert to his previous role overseeing the club's Under-18s side.
Carrick's Interim Appointment and Backroom Staff
The move comes after Ruben Amorim was sacked earlier this month, leaving the managerial position vacant. The club has now turned to Michael Carrick, a former United player, to steer the team until the end of the season, with a permanent appointment expected in the summer. Carrick, 44, who previously managed Middlesbrough, will take charge with the Red Devils sitting seventh in the Premier League, just three points off a coveted top-four spot.
Reports confirm that Carrick is assembling his backroom team, which will include former England coach Steve Holland as his assistant manager. The coaching staff is also set to feature Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion, the current head coach of the Under-21s who will step up to work with the senior squad.
Fletcher's Decision and Future Focus
Despite being offered a role within this new setup, Fletcher has chosen a different path. The Scot prefers to return to his position as Under-18s manager, a role he held before stepping into the first-team breach. It is understood the club supports his desire to continue his long-term coaching development within the academy structure.
Fletcher's brief tenure as caretaker ended with a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup third round last weekend, a result that eliminated United from the competition. Reflecting on his experience, Fletcher stated, 'It’s a massive responsibility to lead this club, and I’ve gave it my best... I am more disappointed than anybody, really, because I care for the club.' He emphasised that the players must now rally to salvage their season and push for a Champions League qualification place.
Looking Ahead for Manchester United
With only Premier League fixtures remaining, Carrick's immediate and sole focus will be on improving the team's league position. His managerial record includes a brief but successful stint as United caretaker in 2021 and a 136-game spell at Middlesbrough. The coming months will be crucial for the club as they navigate the remainder of the campaign under new leadership, while Fletcher resumes his influential work shaping the next generation of talent at Old Trafford.
