According to reports from News 4 Jacksonville, the accident occurred on State Road 24 in Gainesville. Payton-Jones was driving a sedan eastbound in the westbound lanes when his vehicle collided head-on with a pickup truck. The three occupants of the truck sustained only minor injuries, but Payton-Jones's car overturned and burst into flames. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Promising Football Career Cut Short
Born in the Jacksonville area, Payton-Jones played college football at Nebraska from 2014 to 2017 under the name Chris Jones. Despite going undrafted in the 2018 NFL draft, he built a respectable professional career, appearing in 29 regular-season games across four teams: the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2021.
After his NFL stint, he continued playing in alternative leagues, joining the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL in 2023 and spending the past two seasons with the St. Louis Battlehawks of the United Football League (UFL).

His high school football coach, Ada Geis, shared heartfelt memories with News 4 Jacksonville, highlighting Payton-Jones's unwavering commitment and infectious positivity. "The kid never missed a workout, never missed practice, and never wanted to come off the field. Everyone loved him," Geis said. "He was always unbelievably positive. I've never heard that kid ever say anything negative about anyone or anything. It was always a pleasure to be around him. You were always happy to see him."
Transition to Full-Time Content Creation
Payton-Jones retired from professional football in January of this year, turning his side business of content creation into a full-time career. His YouTube channel, Flashflix, featured primarily sports-related video content and had amassed over 1 million views. Beyond his own success, he was known as a keen mentor to young videographers aspiring to break into the sports media industry.
