Cristian Romero, Tottenham's injured captain, has flown to Argentina to watch his boyhood club Belgrano, drawing criticism from former player and manager Glenn Hoddle, who called it 'selfishness.' However, head coach Roberto De Zerbi has defended the decision, stating it was made in consultation with the medical staff.
De Zerbi's Defense
De Zerbi explained that Romero spoke with the medical team and they jointly decided he should go to Argentina to complete his rehabilitation with the Argentine medical staff. 'The injury is already an injury, and we have to accept it,' De Zerbi said. 'I'm not stupid, if I understand there is any player who thinks for himself before the club, I can't be the same Roberto. But with Kuti Romero, I can't say nothing, because with me, in my time, he has been correct.'
Hoddle's Criticism
Glenn Hoddle had earlier remarked that Romero's decision 'sums his selfishness up.' De Zerbi responded by saying the decision was with the medical staff and that Romero's presence at the stadium would not change the outcome. 'I have no time to lose energy thinking about other things. We have to be focused just on the game,' he added.
Team Preparations
Dominic Solanke is expected to be available after a hamstring injury, and Djed Spence will wear a protective mask due to a broken jaw. Tottenham face Everton needing at least a point to avoid relegation for the first time since 1977. A draw would likely suffice given their superior goal difference over West Ham.
De Zerbi emphasized the importance of the match: 'We have to play with blood, with character, with spirit, because it's a final. No one could imagine this situation, but we are inside and we have to fight without excuses.'
