Darts Drives Matchroom Profits as Promoter Warns of Gambling Law Impact

The remarkable growth of darts is significantly boosting profits at Matchroom, with the resurgent sport now contributing a substantial third of the multi-sport promoter's impressive £44 million yield. This financial success comes alongside a stark warning from the organisation about potential impacts from changes to gambling legislation.

Financial Performance and Darts Dominance

Accounts for Matchroom Holdings Limited, the parent company of the professional darts circuit featuring teenage double world champion Luke Littler, revealed turnover of £225.5 million for the year ending 30 June 2025. This represents an increase from £218.3 million the previous year. Profits climbed to £44 million, up from £40.5 million, with darts identified as the primary driver of this growth.

The Professional Darts Corporation Limited (PDC), which operates the main tour, and the World Series of Darts Limited together posted profits of £16.2 million, a notable rise from £13.5 million the year prior. The most recent accounting period included Littler's first world title victory, an event that created an unprecedented surge in popularity for the sport across the United Kingdom and Europe.

Matchroom's Diverse Sports Portfolio

Matchroom, founded by Barry Hearn and now managed by his son Eddie, maintains ownership and investment across various sporting disciplines including boxing, darts, snooker, poker, bowling and fly-fishing. While darts flourished, Matchroom Boxing generated profits of £9.9 million, down from £11.4 million the previous year.

Snooker turned a profit of £1.3 million for Matchroom Holdings Limited, while the multi-sport limited brand generated just shy of £2.5 million. Earlier this year, chairman Eddie Hearn announced the launch of a new talent agency, which has already secured rugby union player Henry Pollock as an early acquisition.

Gambling Sponsorship Concerns

The entire portfolio of sports promoted by Matchroom remains closely associated with gambling, with major brands prominently sponsoring darts and snooker events. However, the organisation has issued a clear warning about potential legislative changes.

Matchroom's financial statements explicitly state that "any change to gambling legislation may affect the ability of companies in the betting and gaming sector to exploit their brands at group events." The company added that "the directors are working to diversify the group's sponsors away from this sector" to mitigate potential future risks.

Darts Popularity and Future Prospects

The extraordinary popularity of darts has been demonstrated through blanket sell-outs at the World Championship at Alexandra Palace, including a subsequent capacity increase after the accounting period. Premier League nights across the UK and Europe have also attracted consistently large audiences, contributing to the sport's financial success.

As Matchroom continues to capitalise on darts' resurgence, the organisation faces the dual challenge of maintaining growth while navigating potential regulatory changes in gambling sponsorship that could significantly impact their revenue streams across multiple sports.
