Chelsea's £7m Bid for Arsenal Target N'Guessan Rejected by Saint-Etienne
Chelsea bid for Arsenal-linked N'Guessan rejected

Chelsea have launched their move for one of France's most exciting young talents, but their opening bid has been swiftly rejected. The Premier League side have reportedly had an offer worth €8 million (approximately £6.8m) turned down for Saint-Etienne forward Djylian N'Guessan.

Who is Chelsea's teenage target?

The Blues, under the ownership of Todd Boehly's BlueCo consortium, are determined to add the 17-year-old to their vast roster of players. N'Guessan only turned professional in November 2024 but has rapidly become a key figure for Saint-Etienne's first team, earning a reputation as one of the brightest prospects in French football.

His rapid rise was recognised on the international stage earlier this year when he was called up to represent France at the Under-20 World Cup. Les Bleus reached the semi-finals, where they suffered a painful shootout defeat to Morocco. N'Guessan missed the decisive penalty, but his overall performances have only enhanced his growing stature.

Saint-Etienne's stance and Chelsea's plan

According to a report from the respected French publication L'Equipe, the situation is forcing Saint-Etienne's hand. The player is said to have no intention of extending his current contract, which runs until June 2027. As a result, the club have reportedly decided to cash in on "one of the most promising players of his generation."

However, they are holding out for a higher fee. It is believed Saint-Etienne are demanding €12.5 million (£10.7m) from Chelsea for the winger. This follows a pattern for BlueCo, who signed midfielder Mathis Amougou from Saint-Etienne last winter before immediately sending him to sister club Strasbourg. Similar multi-club model plans may be in place for N'Guessan.

Premier League interest and family ties

Chelsea are not alone in their admiration for the teenager. The report notes that N'Guessan is also on the radar of London rivals Arsenal, as well as Brentford. His family background adds an intriguing layer to the story; his father, Dany N'Guessan, spent the majority of his playing career in English football with clubs including Lincoln City and Millwall.

Further footballing connections in the family see his younger brother recently leaving Saint-Etienne to join their fierce rivals, Lyon.

Those who work with him have been effusive in their praise. Saint-Etienne head coach Eirik Horneland recently said: "He is a fantastic player and football appears to be in his blood. He is a quiet boy, but in the box, stone cold, with excellent ball control and an amazing finish."

Teammate Pierre Ekwah expressed his shock at discovering N'Guessan's age, stating: "I didn't know his age ahead of my first practice with the team. When I found out his age… wow! I was very surprised."

With the January transfer window opening soon, this saga is set to develop rapidly. Chelsea have made their first move, but must significantly increase their offer if they are to fend off competition and secure the signature of a player touted for a very big future.
