Marilyn Monroe fans flocked to Palm Springs on Saturday to celebrate what would have been the Hollywood icon's 100th birthday, setting a new world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Monroe. A total of 1,034 lookalikes descended on the California desert town, surpassing the previous record.
Record-Breaking Event
The event, held near the city's 26-foot-tall Monroe statue created by artist Seward Johnson in 2011, attracted fans from across the United States and beyond. Participants donned Monroe's signature white dress and platinum blond hair, recreating her iconic look from films like The Seven-Year Itch.
Fans Celebrate the Star
Among the attendees were Lisa Noble, Susan Contreras, and Lori Williams, who posed underneath the Monroe statue in downtown Palm Springs. Fans applied lipstick, blew kisses to the camera, and took selfies, creating a sea of Marilyn Monroe lookalikes. The gathering also included makeup artists styling wigs at the Hyatt hotel.
Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, visited Palm Springs frequently, as did many celebrities of her era. The event honored her legacy and enduring popularity.
