Michael Carrick Agrees to Become Manchester United Interim Head Coach
Carrick Reaches Verbal Agreement for Man Utd Interim Role

Manchester United have moved swiftly to fill their managerial vacancy, reaching a verbal agreement with former player Michael Carrick to become the club's interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Deal Finalised After Late-Night Talks

According to Sky Sports News, negotiations between the club and Carrick continued late into Monday night, with all outstanding issues resolved. The 44-year-old is now expected to sign the formal contract later on Tuesday afternoon, once lawyers on both sides have finalised the paperwork. United are aiming to confirm the appointment by the end of Tuesday, ensuring the new boss can take charge of training on Wednesday.

This rapid timeline is crucial, as it allows preparations to begin immediately for the high-profile Manchester derby against City at the weekend. The search for a temporary leader began last week following the sacking of previous manager Ruben Amorim.

Carrick's Pitch Secures the Role

The appointment follows a series of meetings at the club's Carrington training base. Carrick, along with another former United manager and teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, met with football director Jason Wilcox to discuss the role. Both were considered strong candidates.

It is understood that Carrick's detailed plans for the team's final games of the season proved particularly impressive to the decision-makers. His previous caretaker experience at United, where he oversaw two wins and a draw in three games in 2021, also counted in his favour.

Carrick, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during his 464-game playing career at Old Trafford, most recently managed Middlesbrough. He left the Riverside Stadium last summer after leading the team to the Championship play-offs in his first full season.

Rooney Backs Appointment and Eyes Role

The news has been welcomed by United legend Wayne Rooney, who played alongside Carrick for many years. Speaking on his BBC Sport show, Rooney endorsed his former teammate, stating, "Michael is a very clever person and he'll command respect from the dressing room."

Rooney went further, indicating he would be open to joining Carrick's backroom staff if asked, calling the prospect a "no-brainer." It is believed Carrick is keen to bring his former Middlesbrough assistant, Jonathan Woodgate, with him to Manchester.

The immediate task for the new interim boss is clear. With United currently seventh in the Premier League and out of both domestic cup competitions, the sole focus is securing European qualification for next season. His reign will begin with the ultimate test: a derby clash against Manchester City on Saturday.
