Jamie Carragher has performed a dramatic U-turn on his earlier prediction backing Arsenal to win the Champions League this season, despite Mikel Arteta's team securing their place in the semi-finals on Wednesday night.
Arsenal's Path to the Semi-Finals
Arsenal entered their second leg against Sporting CP with a 1-0 advantage from the first match in Lisbon last week. At the Emirates Stadium, a goalless draw proved sufficient to advance to the final four of Europe's premier club competition. This result sets up a semi-final clash against Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
The Other Semi-Final Matchup
In the other Champions League semi-final, Paris Saint-Germain will face Bayern Munich. This pairing was confirmed after Vincent Kompany's Bayern side secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday evening.
Carragher's Original Prediction
Before the Champions League last-16 matches commenced last month, Carragher had confidently predicted that Arsenal would defeat PSG in the final scheduled for Budapest on May 30. The former Liverpool and England defender had expressed strong belief in Arsenal's capabilities at that stage of the competition.
The Reason for the Reversal
Carragher now believes Arsenal's lack of a genuine 'star' player across their attacking lineup will ultimately undermine their chances of Champions League glory this season. Speaking to CBS Sports, he elaborated on his changed perspective.
'I'm not sure they've got the quality in the attack,' Carragher stated. 'The game we just watched tonight, you think of the players on both teams, Arsenal don't have that.'
He continued: 'It's not a criticism, they just don't have those players in attack, they haven't. So, that's why I think when you get to the business end of the season, certainly in the Champions League... even though I tipped Arsenal to win it, I just don't believe it.'
Carragher concluded with his fundamental concern: 'I can't see a team winning the Champions League who don't have a star in the front four, and they haven't got one.'
Champions League Semi-Final Draw
- Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich
- Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid
Despite Carragher's revised prediction, Arsenal's progression to the semi-finals represents a significant achievement for Mikel Arteta's squad as they continue their European campaign against formidable opposition.
