Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes Injury Doubt for Liverpool Clash
Bruno Guimaraes Injury Doubt for Liverpool vs Newcastle

Newcastle United face a significant selection headache ahead of their crucial Premier League encounter with Liverpool this weekend, as key midfielder Bruno Guimaraes continues to battle an ankle injury that casts doubt over his availability.

Bruno's Fitness Remains Uncertain

The Brazilian international was notably absent from Newcastle's squad during their disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa last Sunday, with the ankle problem preventing his participation. Despite travelling with the team to Paris for their midweek Champions League fixture against PSG, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Guimaraes remained an unused substitute throughout the match.

Manager Eddie Howe addressed the media on Friday, revealing that the midfielder's situation remains unclear. 'It's slightly unknown at the moment,' Howe admitted when questioned about Guimaraes' prospects for the Liverpool game. 'I'd say he did really well to be with us in Paris – I think that was down to the fact he was desperate to be there and to support the players.'

Training Progress Under Scrutiny

Howe provided detailed insight into Guimaraes' recent training regimen, explaining that the player has been undertaking minimal activity. 'He did very, very light training, he participated in that but it was next to nothing, to be honest,' the Newcastle boss revealed. 'He trained with us yesterday but that was more of a test so we'll see how he is today. This will be the day really where we decide.'

The timing of this decision is particularly crucial, with Liverpool visiting St James' Park on Saturday in what promises to be a pivotal Premier League fixture for both clubs.

Positive News on Other Injury Fronts

While Guimaraes' situation remains in the balance, Howe delivered more encouraging updates regarding other injured squad members. Joelinton, who has been struggling with a groin issue, received positive news after visiting a specialist in Barcelona.

'He flew on to Barcelona after the game to get an injection in his groin,' Howe explained. 'It was good news. The specialist feels he only needs one injection and that means his return could be quite quick and we're looking at weeks, not months. Unsure of the exact date yet, but it's positive news.'

Livramento's Recovery Timeline

Howe also provided an update on defender Tino Livramento, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. 'He's doing well,' the manager confirmed. 'I believe he's having a scan today – a second scan to see the progress of his hamstring. Fingers crossed it's good news and if it is, he'll be back out running.'

The young full-back is expected to return to action in early March, with Howe noting: 'We're still probably five to six weeks away and we're looking at an early March return, providing everything goes well.'

Newcastle will be hoping for positive developments on all injury fronts as they prepare to face a Liverpool side that will present a formidable challenge at St James' Park this Saturday.
