Arsenal 2 Leeds 1: Calafiori and Guimaraes inspire comeback

Arsenal recovered from a sluggish first-half display to secure a 2-1 comeback victory over Leeds United at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with Riccardo Calafiori and substitute Bruno Guimaraes scoring the goals that overturned James Justin's opener.

Arsenal struggle in first half

The champions looked short of energy and ideas in a tepid first half, with chances at a premium. Kai Havertz appeared out of sorts, Martin Odegaard's passing radar malfunctioned, and Bukayo Saka struggled to beat his marker. Leeds, pressing tightly and showing physical commitment, limited Arsenal's creativity and forced the home side into sideways and backward passes.

The best chance of the half fell to Havertz, who headed Noni Madueke's cross straight at Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford. At the other end, David Raya denied Ethan Ampadu with a goal-line save from a looping header, and Gabriel Gudmundsson forced another stop from the Arsenal keeper with a close-range effort.

Leeds take the lead before Arsenal respond

The visitors broke the deadlock when James Justin finished a counter-attack, firing past Raya at the back post after the keeper missed a skidding cross. The goal served as a wake-up call for Arsenal, who had lost at Brighton before the international break and risked a similar collapse.

The response was swift. Ben White headed a deep cross back into the box, and Calafiori forced the ball past Trafford, who juggled it on its way in. Calafiori had been one of the few Arsenal players to match Leeds' physicality, winning 50/50 challenges and pushing play forward.

Guimaraes seals the turnaround

Arsenal then moved through the gears and scored what may be their best goal of the season, a flowing move of kicks and flicks that opened up the Leeds defence for Bruno Guimaraes, introduced as a substitute, to power a low shot into the corner.

Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the team's slow start but praised the reaction. "The first few days were not great, especially because you're questioning yourself, what you haven't done in that game, to be able to witness a game that my eyes were in pain," he said, referring to the response to the Brighton defeat.

The win lifts Arsenal back to winning ways in the Premier League, though their reliance on falling behind to spark a revival remains a concern. Calafiori's performance, in particular, highlighted his value as a potential solution on the left wing, a position that has troubled the club.
