Arsenal recovered from a sluggish first half to secure a 2-1 comeback victory over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with goals from Riccardo Calafiori and substitute Bruno Guimaraes cancelling out James Justin's opener. The win moves the Gunners back to winning ways after their defeat at Brighton before the international break.
First Half Struggle
The champions looked off the pace in the opening 45 minutes, struggling to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Leeds side. Kai Havertz headed straight at Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford from Noni Madueke's cross, while David Raya was called into action to deny Ethan Ampadu's looping header and a close-range effort from Gabriel Gudmundsson.
Mikel Arteta's team found it difficult to break down Leeds' tight press, with Martin Odegaard's passing off target and Bukayo Saka unable to beat his man. The lack of zip in Arsenal's play was evident, as they were forced to look backwards too often, similar to their performance against Brighton earlier in the season.
Second Half Response
Leeds took the lead against the run of play when James Justin fired past Raya at the back post after a counter-attack, following a skidding cross that the keeper failed to deal with. The goal served as a wake-up call for Arsenal, who responded swiftly.
Ben White headed a deep cross back into the box, and Calafiori forced the ball past Trafford, who juggled it on its way in. Calafiori had been one of the few Arsenal players to match Leeds' physicality, winning 50/50s and pushing the play forward. His performance has led to calls for him to be deployed on the left wing, a position Arsenal have struggled to fill.
Arsenal then powered through the gears and scored what could be their best goal of the season, as a series of kicks and flicks opened up a path for Guimaraes, on as a substitute, to power the ball low into the corner. The turnaround was swift and decisive, but it required falling behind to spark the revival.
Arteta's Reaction
Speaking after the match, Arteta reflected on the team's response to the deflating loss at Brighton, saying, "The first few days were not great, especially because you're questioning yourself, what you haven't done in that game, to be able to witness a game that my eyes were in pain."
The win gives Arsenal momentum as they look to build on their title defence, with the performance highlighting both their resilience and the need to address their slow starts against physical opposition.
