Aston Villa's hopes of securing Champions League football suffered a setback as they were held to a 2-2 draw by an already-relegated Burnley side at Turf Moor. Zian Flemming's 10th goal of the season earned the hosts a point, cancelling out Ollie Watkins' second-half strike.
First Half: Burnley Take Surprise Lead
Burnley opened the scoring through Jaidon Anthony, who capitalised on a mistake by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. The England international parried Lesley Ugochukwu's tame shot straight to Anthony, who fired home from close range. It was Burnley's first home lead in four months, leaving the home crowd momentarily stunned.
Villa struggled to find their rhythm after their midweek Europa League triumph over Nottingham Forest. The visitors lacked energy and creativity, with Burnley's deep defensive block proving difficult to break down. Zian Flemming should have doubled the lead when Ezri Konsa slipped, but the forward scuffed his shot wide from 12 yards.
Villa Fight Back Before Break
Youri Tielemans began to inspire Villa, and his cross found John McGinn, whose pull-back was scuffed wide by Ross Barkley. The Belgian then tested debutant goalkeeper Max Weiss with a dipping 25-yard shot, forcing a tip over the bar.
Villa equalised from a corner routine, with Barkley flicking home McGinn's delivery at the front post. Watkins thought he had given Villa the lead earlier, but his header was ruled out for offside.
Second Half: Watkins Strikes, Flemming Levels
The second half started sloppily, with neither side able to find rhythm. Burnley created a fine move when Hannibal Mejbri sent a cross to Flemming, but the forward could only graze the ball with his studs. Moments later, Villa took the lead through Watkins, who slid in after a mix-up between Axel Tuanzebe, Maxime Estève, and Weiss.
Burnley responded with determination, and Flemming finally made amends for his earlier misses. Mejbri produced a delightful flick in the box, and Flemming sidefooted home his 10th goal of the season. The home fans chanted, 'Istanbul? You're having a laugh,' in reference to Villa's Europa League final.
Open Finish, No Winner
The game became open in the final 20 minutes as both sides pushed for a winner. Villa had the better chances but failed to test Weiss, leaving the visitors to settle for a point. Villa remain four points clear of sixth-placed Bournemouth with two games remaining, but this felt like a missed opportunity.
