Ajax Turn Attention to Arsenal Midfielder After Ugarte Loan Bid Fails
Dutch giants Ajax are reportedly exploring a potential move for Arsenal midfielder Christian Norgaard, following the rejection of their loan offer for Manchester United's Manuel Ugarte. According to sources from De Telegraaf, the Eredivisie club is actively seeking to bolster their defensive midfield options before the January transfer window closes, with Norgaard emerging as a viable alternative.
Manchester United Stand Firm on £42 Million Signing
Ajax's initial target, Manuel Ugarte, remains at Old Trafford despite his inconsistent performances since joining from Paris Saint-Germain eighteen months ago in a deal worth £42 million. Manchester United have declined the loan approach, indicating their continued faith in the Uruguayan international, even as he struggles to find his best form in the Premier League.
Norgaard's Frustrating Spell at Arsenal
Christian Norgaard, who arrived at Arsenal from Brentford during the summer transfer window, has seen limited action under manager Mikel Arteta. The 31-year-old Danish international was brought in to provide cover and competition for established players like Jorginho and Thomas Partey, but opportunities have been scarce due to the impressive form and availability of Martin Zubimendi.
So far this season, Norgaard has made just three substitute appearances in the Premier League. He has also been deployed in an unfamiliar centre-half role during FA Cup and Champions League fixtures, highlighting his versatility but underscoring his struggle for regular minutes in his preferred position.
Arteta's Praise Amidst Limited Game Time
Despite Norgaard's peripheral role, Mikel Arteta has publicly commended his professionalism and impact within the squad. The Arsenal manager recently described him as the best trainer at the club, praising his attitude and dedication. However, this admiration has not translated into significant playing time, fueling speculation about a potential January exit.
Arsenal's Transfer Considerations
Arsenal are unlikely to facilitate Norgaard's departure easily, particularly after sanctioning a loan move for young talent Ethan Nwaneri to Marseille for the remainder of the campaign. Nwaneri will be joined at the French club by Quinten Timber, brother of Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber, with Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi effectively confirming both deals ahead of their potential debuts this weekend.
When questioned about Nwaneri's situation after Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Inter Milan, Arteta acknowledged that a move could benefit all parties, stating: "We'll have a discussion this week. Obviously he's not having the minutes that probably he deserves as well and he needs at his age. We will address the situation and see what is best."
This context makes any decision on Norgaard's future particularly delicate for Arsenal, as they balance squad depth with player development and satisfaction.
