The driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal collision in Nigeria, which resulted in the deaths of two close friends of British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua, has now been formally charged by police.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The crash occurred on Monday near Lagos, Nigeria, when the Lexus SUV carrying Anthony Joshua, his strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami, and trainer Latif 'Latz' Ayodele collided with a stationary truck on a major road.

Tragically, both Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele lost their lives in the accident. Anthony Joshua sustained injuries but was later released from medical care on Wednesday, 31st December, deemed fit to continue his recovery at home according to Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotoso.

Legal Proceedings Begin

On Friday, 2nd January 2026, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that 46-year-old driver Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode had been charged in connection with the crash. The case was brought before the Sagamu Magistrate Court, with proceedings adjourned until 20th January 2026.

A statement released on the police force's official X account provided the confirmation but did not elaborate on the specific charges faced by Kayode.

Boxing World in Mourning

The boxing community has been united in grief following the loss of Joshua's long-term friends and key team members. Promoter Eddie Hearn, who has worked with the 36-year-old former champion since he turned professional, posted a heartfelt tribute praising the men's "energy and loyalty".
