A drug dealer who took inspiration from the classic Christmas film Home Alone to booby-trap his property with homemade explosives and tripwires has been jailed for seven years at Sheffield Crown Court.
Grimethorpe Evacuations and Police Discovery
In May 2024, police in Grimethorpe, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, evacuated over 100 homes while searching properties linked to Ian Claughton, 60, and his ex-wife. Officers uncovered a series of dangerous traps designed to protect Claughton's illicit drugs operation from intruders.
Elaborate Traps and Weapons Cache
The booby traps included fishing wire strung across rooms at knee height, connected to electrical components and battery packs. Claughton had fashioned homemade pipe bombs using crow-scarers inserted into plastic piping and even a bag of paint. Other devices found consisted of banger fireworks sealed inside piping with foam, wires, and coiled springs.
Police also discovered a substantial arsenal of weapons and drugs across the properties:
- A homemade flamethrower in a workshop
- A stun gun hidden behind a fridge-freezer
- Two high-powered air guns and a crossbow
- Large quantities of cannabis and amphetamines
- £27,000 in cash sewn into a sofa
- Cannabis plants growing in tents within hidden rooms
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
At Sheffield Crown Court, Judge Graham Reeds sentenced Claughton to seven years imprisonment. Prosecutor Helen Chapman told jurors during the trial's opening in October that Claughton had explicitly told police he was aiming for a Home Alone-style setup with his devices.
Claughton pleaded guilty to multiple charges including bringing realistic imitation firearms into the country, production of cannabis, and possession with intent to supply class B drugs. He was convicted after trial of additional offences including possessing prohibited firearms and explosive substances.
Ex-Wife's Involvement and Suspended Sentence
Lesley Claughton, 59, was found guilty of related charges including bringing imitation firearms into the country and drug offences. She received a 21-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
The couple's downfall began when detectives intercepted a package of imitation firearms ordered from China to Lesley's address. The package, opened at Heathrow Airport, contained five small silver-and-black folding revolvers. The court heard Claughton had placed the order using his ex-wife's eBay account.
This case highlights the extreme measures some criminals will take to protect illegal operations, with Claughton's Home Alone inspiration resulting in a substantial prison term and widespread disruption to the Grimethorpe community.
