A lone Argentine supporter was escorted away from huge crowds of England fans by Metropolitan Police officers after the World Cup loss yesterday evening. Tensions flared in central London following the Three Lions' 2-1 defeat to Argentina, the defending champions.
Police escort through hostile crowd
The man, wearing an Argentina shirt with Messi emblazoned on it, was flanked by officers who rushed him to safety from screaming crowds. Fans wrapped in England flags shouted and swore at him, calling him a 'w****r' and making hand gestures. At least one object is said to have been thrown at him.
Officers told people to stay back as they walked him through a wall of jeering crowds. He was taken to a police van, appearing stunned by the violent behaviour, and raised his hands in the air after reaching safety before being driven away. There is no suggestion he did anything wrong.
World Cup aftermath
The Three Lions' successful run in the 2026 World Cup ended after they were beaten 2-1 by Argentina. England fans watching at Wembley's Boxpark were left in tears. Twin brothers Luke and Vee Moore, aged 33, expressed disappointment. Vee said: 'We fumbled it. I’m feeling disappointed, this was a great chance to win the World Cup and this was a weak Argentina team. If we got out-classed, I’d be like, okay, cool. England did not play a better team today. We were too defensive after we went one nil up.' Luke said he was disappointed because he 'thought it was coming home.'
Argentina's manager adds to tension
Argentina and Spain will face off in Sunday's final. Argentine manager Lionel Scaloni said he and his players could tell England were 'doubting themselves.' Metro contacted the Met Police for a comment.
