Oakland Community Grieves After Deadly Bar Shooting Claims Two Lives

A beloved teacher and a devoted father were identified as the two victims killed in a mass shooting at an Oakland, California, bar over the weekend, leaving the community reeling from the tragic loss.

Victims Remembered as Cherished Educator and Loving Father

Latetia Bobo, a 33-year-old eighth-grade English language arts teacher at Caliber public schools, was remembered by her school district as a "special part of our community, deeply cherished by her students, their families, and her colleagues." The district praised her as an incredible educator and human being who brought unmistakable light to their campus.

Markise Martin, a 25-year-old father, was described by his family in a GoFundMe campaign as a "loving son, a devoted father to his one-year-old daughter, and a kind, protective brother." His family noted that he was always there for his loved ones, offering support and love without hesitation.

Chaotic Scene at EZ's Lounge

The shooting occurred just after 3:30 a.m. on Saturday at EZ's Lounge, a hip-hop nightclub in Oakland. According to witnesses, the incident sent a crowd of people fleeing in panic. "I didn't even hear the gun shots, I just heard like 100 people running," local tattoo artist Kuzi told KTVU. "There were a lot of people crying, screaming, the whole street was blocked off."

Oakland police officers responding to the scene found seven people injured by gunfire. Bobo died at the scene, while Martin succumbed to his injuries at the hospital later that morning. The five other victims are reported to be in stable condition.

Police Investigation and Community Response

Police detained multiple individuals at the scene and recovered several firearms. Investigators from the Oakland Police Department homicide division are conducting a follow-up investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, though no specific details about what led to the shooting have been released.

The violence has sparked an outpouring of grief from friends, family, and parents of Bobo's current and former students. Robin DeGracia, who had two children taught by Bobo, expressed anger and sorrow, telling CBS San Francisco, "I'm angry. Not that anyone ever deserves it, but she definitely didn't deserve it. She was just talking about her fiance, and now she's gone."

Context of Oakland's Violence Prevention Efforts

This tragic incident comes after Oakland reported its lowest homicide rate in nearly 50 years in 2025, with 67 homicides representing a 22% drop from 2024. City leaders have credited violence prevention strategies, including Operation Ceasefire, a collaboration between law enforcement and community organizations that identifies individuals at high risk of gun violence and offers them social services and support.

Oakland City Council member Carroll Fife lamented the recent violence, emphasizing that the city will not tolerate such tragedies. "It's tragic," she said in a video shared on social media. "Oakland deserves to have venues where people don't have to worry whether they're going to come home or not."

The community continues to mourn the loss of two vibrant individuals while grappling with the ongoing challenge of gun violence in urban areas.
