Mexican social media personality César Gastélum, known for his comedic TikTok videos and nearly 600,000 followers, was shot dead on Wednesday while broadcasting live outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa state. The attack occurred amid escalating cartel violence in the region.
Details of the attack
Gastélum was filming with two friends, all wearing the bright orange jackets and backpacks of food delivery drivers, when a motorcycle with two occupants pulled up beside them. The driver drew a firearm and shot Gastélum at point-blank range before fleeing the scene, according to witnesses and security reports.
A Sinaloa security official confirmed Gastélum's death to Reuters and stated that a major security operation had been launched to apprehend the attackers.
Investigation and official response
Mexico's security cabinet announced on X that it was analyzing several of Gastélum's social media posts, noting that some referred to a faction of a criminal group. Video surveillance footage and other evidence are being examined to identify and arrest those responsible.
President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the killing during her morning press conference, stating: "The actual perpetrators, and if applicable the mastermind, must be arrested, and the reason behind this tragic homicide must be uncovered." Authorities are working to determine whether the attack was linked to Gastélum's online activities.
Rising violence against influencers
Gastélum's murder is part of a disturbing trend. According to local media, at least 12 social media influencers have been killed in Culiacán since September 2024, when two factions of the Sinaloa cartel began a violent power struggle. The city has become an epicenter of cartel-related bloodshed.
In a separate case last year, 23-year-old Valeria Márquez was shot and killed at a beauty salon in Jalisco state while live-streaming on TikTok, where she had thousands of followers. Authorities recently arrested Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, a criminal cell leader linked to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, in connection with her murder.
Álvarez Ayala is also accused of ordering and financing the November 2025 assassination of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan in Michoacán, a killing that shocked the nation.
