Lodger beheaded and hacked apart by weapons fanatic, trial hears

A murder trial at Sheffield Crown Court has heard that a missing man's body was dismembered with a saw and hidden in a concrete-filled barrel for almost six years. Richard Dyson, 55, vanished in late 2019, and his remains were discovered protruding from a barrel on farmland in Barnsley last summer.

Pathologist Details Dismemberment

Forensic pathologist Dr Charles Wilson told jurors that Mr Dyson had been beheaded, and his arms and legs were dismembered using a saw and possibly a knife. Dr Wilson explained that the arms were removed at the shoulder joints after being disarticulated with a knife, while the legs were cut off with a saw that sliced through both femur bones because the hip joint was much more difficult to cut with a knife.

Dr Wilson described the recovery operation: 'We formed a strategy to remove the deceased from the barrel and the concrete, trying to cause as little damage as we could to the remains. This actually took days. There was vegetation beneath the layer of concrete, and among that were human remains in an advanced state of decomposition.'

Cause of Death and Injuries

The court heard that Mr Dyson died from a fatal shotgun wound to the torso, with shotgun pellets embedded in the lower right rib cage after entering through the left side of the body. Fractures to the left side of the face, including the cheek, eye socket, and roof of the mouth, indicated blunt force trauma, but it was impossible to determine whether those injuries occurred before or after death because the skull had been buried beneath three bricks along with concrete.

Prosecution Allegations

Prosecutor Peter Moulson KC alleged that Christopher Wright, 73, described as a 'weapons fanatic', shot Mr Dyson dead on November 17, 2019, after the victim stole and sold some of his firearms. Mr Dyson had been living in one of three vehicles parked at Wright's home, Parkside Cottage, in Hoyland, Barnsley. Wright is charged with murder, preventing a lawful burial, and several firearms offences. He denies all charges.

Prosecutors also allege that Wright was helped by his friend and co-accused Karl Schwalbe, who lived nearby. Schwalbe, of Dike Hill, Harley, Rotherham, is jointly charged with perverting the course of justice and denies the charge. The trial continues.
