A 26-year-old footballer who was expecting his second child has died after a car ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians in Arnold, Nottinghamshire. Tyler, a player for Woodthorpe Park Rangers FC, was celebrating the end of the season with teammates when a red Vauxhall Astra mounted the kerb and struck the group at around 1:12 am on Saturday.
Victim succumbs to injuries
Tyler, a father of one, was rushed to hospital where he fought for his life before succumbing to his injuries on Wednesday. His partner, Lauren Clifford, an NHS worker, is in the final stages of pregnancy with their baby girl. A fundraiser set up by Laura Clifford described the loss as one no one should have to endure.
Murder investigation launched
Following Tyler's death, Nottinghamshire Police have launched a murder investigation. Duane Anthony, 40, was arrested on Saturday evening and has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, taking a vehicle, and driving offences including not having a valid licence. He remains in custody.
Community in mourning
Woodthorpe Park Rangers FC paid tribute to Tyler, posting a picture of him in his orange kit with the caption: 'Rest in peace TY, forever our number 6.' The club said the team's 'lovely evening ended up in complete heartbreak' when three members, including the manager, were struck. Two other teammates sustained minor injuries.
Michael Payne, MP for Gedling, expressed his deepest sympathy, saying: 'This is such a heartbreaking loss. I will do all I can to support Tyler's family, loved ones and our community.' Gedling Borough Council confirmed there is no threat to the wider public and urged residents not to speculate.
Police appeal
Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow of Nottinghamshire Police said: 'Our first thoughts go to Tyler's family and loved ones at this difficult time. Both they and the other people injured continue to be supported by specially trained officers.' She confirmed the investigation is active and urged anyone with information to share it with police, not online, to avoid impeding justice. She also appealed for videos of the incident circulating on social media to be removed to allow the family to grieve in peace.
